The Pickaroon is a curious-looking tool that gets looked over and underestimated on an almost continuous basis.
Besides saving you a lot of time, the Pickaroon will also save your shoulders, back, and knees.
Put simply, the Pickaroon is designed to help you move a piece of wood from over there to over here.
In practice that looks like:
- Picking up firewood (rounds or split) off the ground without having to bend over
- Carrying rounds from place to place at your side (essentially adding a handle to your wood)
- Dragging a piece out of the bed of your truck without having to climb up into it
- pulling or pushing a slab through the mill or table saw
- Rolling logs or bigger rounds
- Pulling small logs across the ground
The list can go on and on, but I think you get my point - this tool has countless uses, and each one helps your work move faster and your body last longer.
The pick is designed in such a way that you only need to sharpen one facet of the pick to maintain or change its cutting and sticking power. All you need to do is take a flat hand file to the factory-sharpened edge for a few strokes - it's that simple.
You can make your work of moving rounds faster and more comfortable by having a Pickaroon in both hands. Not only are you able to do twice the amount of work but having a balanced load makes it much easier for your body to handle.
This 28" Pickaroon is more focused on the firewood-centered tasks you may encounter but the 36" Pickaroon is much more suited for reaching and getting wood out of the back of a car or pulling a slab off a mill.

~ 3-sided pick, sharpened to a point out of the box.
~ Under-cutter on the bottom side of the pick that can be used to cleave off small limbs, and brush.
~ Large poll face to help drive/pound bucking wedges, or small/medium felling wedges.
~ Full-sized standard axe eye for readily available replacement handles.
~ 28” straight waxed handle for one-handed use, with substantial palm-swell for a secure grip. The overall finished lengths with be just under 28”.

Finally chose to pull the trigger on a pickaroon... Actually bought two of them as having one for each hand sounded like a good plan! Anyway, totally satisfied with the purchase as I have never used one before. First off, it is totally amazing how a simple "thunk" on the end of a log will actually allow you to pick up the entire piece of wood! Then to release, just push down and rock the handle the opposite way... and BINGO the log releases! I am sure I will become even more proficient with this tool as time goes on... This tool will undoubtedly save a ton of wear and tear on the old back as well!!! (Recommended) :0)
I work on a ranch where I do a lot of tree work, and split 6-8 cords a year by hand (I don’t feel like this is the group of people I have to explain why by hand). It is a handle for every piece of wood I have to move. From processing downed trees to splitting rounds, this tool allows me to be more efficient. I bought this with the original intention of just helping with firewood, but I use this thing on a near daily basis. I did customize mine slightly in decreasing the bevel angle and exaggerating the overall taper. This allowed it to enter the wood easier (bevel angle), but come out of the wood without sticking (taper). I truly appreciate having this tool in my arsenal.
Works incredibly well, the 28” straight handle is great for quickly grabbing and hoisting heavy rounds for splitting. I have a few hookaroons, and they work well, but this Council 28”-er is what I consider the ultimate workhorse. It’s sturdy, it’s very well made, and can make it easy to lift heavy rounds that I’d throw my back out on if I had to lift them without the Pickaroon! Cannot possibly recommend this enough! Probably the best tool on the Whiskey River site!
My 28” picaroon is still new, but I am having great success with it.
It works very well on the pieces I’m currently working on. I’m looking forward to testing it on other size and weight items.
