"A Badass Double Bit Axe" - Outside Magazine

This Saddle Axe is a beautiful example of a quality American made tool.  The head is a solid 2lbs of drop forged 5160 steel and the haft starts with 16 inches of smooth, finished hickory, is trimmed during the hanging process to a little over 15 inches.

One side carries a 25 degree flat grind that excels at tasks such as cutting, shaving and carving, while the opposite side carries a wider 32 degree flat grind that is perfect for taking care of your heavier work such as splitting and limb-ing. To protect the razor sharp edges and your fingers, this axe ships with a leather double bit mask.

The Council Tool Saddle Axe is an innovative revival of a very classic and very functional axe pattern. The Saddle Axe is named simply because it was very easy to pack into your saddle. It took an essential and heavy tool (the axe) and made it easy to bring along an any expedition, excursion, or adventure.

No Regrets!

I purchased this one a couple of months ago, and have been very pleased with it. "Premium" is more than just a just a sales pitch The grain of the handle was tight, well oriented, with not even a hint of run out. The bit took a truly extraordinary edge that not every axe or hatchet is capable of, and maintained it well. It was a handy addition in my pack while moose and caribou hunting, as well as performing maintenance at the remote family cabin.

Given it's short, handy length it chops far outside of it's size range. The concept of having a thicker edge for heavier duty tasks and a thinner edge for finer tasks has proven to be solid for me with this little hatchet. I thought I would miss having a flat poll for light hammering tasks such as tent stakes and such, but it has not been an inconvenience at all.

I'd feel like a shill if I didn't mention a couple caveats-

From the factory, I felt that it could have had a better edge. I'm a big fan of Council Tool, but the Swedes are beating 'em in this regard. It did however, take and hold an incredible edge fairly easily, and it's not hard to maintain after some use.

the phantom bevels were fairly asymmetrical. It makes no real world difference, but if you're the OCD type, it might bother you.

This is an amazing outdoor companion due to it's lightweight, compact size, design, and cutting edge. I honestly purchased it on a whim as a novelty, but it will be a permanent part of my future outdoor activities.

2 axes in one

If you are like me you follow the mantra that 2 is 1. This thing follows that principal and I love it! It also splits wood waaaaaay better than you would guess
